What changes by state — and what does not
One rate, two different splits
Sell to a customer in your own state and GST is charged as CGST + SGST. Sell to another state and the same total is charged as IGST instead. The rate does not change — only how it is split, and who ultimately receives it.
Your state is already in your GSTIN
The first two digits of every GSTIN are its state code. That code, compared against your customer’s, is what decides whether a sale is intra-state or inter-state — which is why the split can be worked out automatically rather than chosen by hand.
E-invoicing and e-way bills are central, not state-level
Both run through central government systems and behave identically in every state. Nothing about them changes because you moved city, so a tool that handles them handles them everywhere.
Guides to the rules
Plain-language explanations of the parts of GST that decide what goes on an invoice. Anything here that looks like it may have moved is worth checking against the official GST portal — thresholds and due dates change, and we would rather send you to the source than have you take a marketing page’s word for it.
Common questions
- Does GST invoicing work differently in different states?
- No. GST is central law, so the invoice format, the tax rates and the returns you file are the same across India. What changes with your location is the state code in your GSTIN, and whether a particular sale is intra-state (CGST + SGST) or inter-state (IGST).
- How do I know whether to charge CGST + SGST or IGST?
- Compare the place of supply against your own state. Same state, CGST + SGST. Different state, IGST. ईnvocify reads the state code from both GSTINs and applies the correct split automatically, so it is not something you have to remember per invoice.
- Do you only support these cities?
- No — ईnvocify works anywhere in India. These city pages exist to answer local questions such as the state code and the intra-state split. They are not separate products, and the pricing is identical everywhere.
- Do I need e-invoicing (IRN)?
- It applies once your aggregate turnover crosses the threshold notified by the GST Council, which has been lowered in stages — so the answer depends on your turnover and on the current notification rather than on your city. Our step-by-step guide covers how to check whether it applies to you and how to generate an IRN.
